
The Song No One Has Heard Yet: Why Children Must Listen Before They Can Read
Mrs. Wati, a first grade teacher on the outskirts of a mid sized Indonesian city, had one student who kept unsettling her. His name was Dafa. Ask him to recite the alphabet, and he rattled it off without hesitation. A, B, C memorized cold.
But ask him for a word that rhymes with “cat,” and he froze, then offered “table.” Ask him to break “soap” into its smallest sounds, and he could only repeat “soap, soap,” unable to pull it apart any further. Mrs. Wati began to suspect that what she’d been labeling “not yet fluent” was rooted in something far deeper than letter memorization.
She was right. And stories like Dafa’s play out in thousands of first-grade classrooms every new school year, in Indonesia and far beyond it.
The question is simple, and unsettling, how can a child know every letter by heart and still struggle to read? How does the ability to name letters fail to automatically become the ability to read words? Something is missing between the two something that rarely shows up on paper, because it doesn’t live on paper. It lives in the ear.
Words as Little Songs
Picture every spoken word as a short song. “Kit-ten” carries two beats. “Cat” rhymes with “hat” because their endings share the same note. “Soap” breaks into three small sounds when you push it down to its phonemes: /s/-/oʊ/-/p/. Before a child can read the musical notation of that song the letters printed on a page she first has to be able to hear the song itself. She has to catch the beats, the rhymes, the small notes that make up a word, long before her eyes learn to recognize the symbols standing in for those sounds.
This is what researchers call phonological awareness: the ability to hear and manipulate the sound structure of spoken language, independent of meaning. A child who can feel that “cat” and “hat” share an ending, or who can clap out the syllables in “el-e-phant,” is training the very ear that will eventually let her “read” that song on paper. Without that trained ear, knowing letters becomes memorizing shapes stripped of any sound they’re meant to carry.

Not Just Intuition Decades of Research Behind It
This isn’t an educator’s hopeful guess. Bradley and Bryant’s classic early 1980s research found that preschoolers’ ability to categorize sounds detecting rhyme and alliteration causally shaped how well they learned to read years later, not merely correlated with it. Goswami and Bryant later reinforced the finding: phonological skill is one of the strongest foundations a child brings into literacy, even before recognizing a single letter.
Marilyn Adams, in her landmark synthesis of how children learn to read, made much the same case: phonological awareness isn’t a nice to have add on it’s the gateway. Without the ability to pull apart and manipulate the sounds inside words, children struggle to grasp why particular letters represent particular sounds, a connection that feels obvious to adults but is anything but obvious to a child who has never been invited to take a word’s sounds apart.
Linda Ehri goes further, describing how phonological awareness fuels a process called orthographic mapping the process by which a child bonds the sounds she hears to the letters she sees, until the word is stored automatically in memory as something already known, rather than something to be sounded out from scratch every time. The landmark National Reading Panel review led by Ehri and colleagues concluded that explicit phonemic awareness instruction consistently improves children’s reading, well beyond what letter recognition alone achieves.
When the Ear Goes Untrained, the Scores Speak
National scale data confirms this concern isn’t just anecdotal. The 2022 PISA results recorded Indonesia’s 15 year old students scoring 359 in reading literacy, down from 371 in 2018, placing the country 68th out of 81 participating nations. The gap to the OECD average of 476 stands at 117 points a gap that didn’t appear suddenly at age 15. It accumulated from the earliest foundation left unbuilt: from the moment children like Dafa sat in first grade with ears that had never been trained to hear the little song inside a word before their eyes were pushed to recognize its letters.
This isn’t Dafa’s fault, nor solely his teacher’s. It’s a question of whether classrooms make room, time, and method for training the ear before training the eye.
What You Can Do Starting Tomorrow
The encouraging part: training a child’s ear is far simpler and more enjoyable than it sounds, and it requires no expensive tools.
For early-grade teachers, slip a five minute sound game in before the reading lesson begins: clap out syllables together, guess rhyming words, or play “swap the first sound” (turn “cat” into “hat,” then ask whether that’s a real word). These activities look trivial. That’s exactly where a child’s ear is being shaped.
For parents, bedtime songs and rhymes aren’t just entertainment. Nursery rhymes packed with rhyme, sound guessing games, even old call and response chants are some of the most natural phonological training that exists, long before a child ever opens a book. You don’t need to wait until your child can read to start training the ear that will let her read.
For policymakers and curriculum designers, this is exactly why the pre-reading phase can’t be skipped in the rush to hit “can read” targets by the end of first grade. An untrained ear, pushed straight into reading, produces letter memorizers not readers who understand.
The Song, Finally Heard
After a few weeks of simple syllable-clapping and rhyme-guessing practice, Dafa could finally pull “soap” apart into its three sounds on his own. When that happened, the letters he’d memorized by rote suddenly meant something. He wasn’t memorizing symbols anymore. He was starting to hear the song behind them.
Before asking a child to read the notation, make sure her ear can already hear the song. The rest, as the old saying goes, is just a matter of time.
